Welcome!

Dear Subscriber,

Happy International Women’s Day!

On Thursday we held our long‑awaited Economic Outlook 2026, with over 100 participants from the German‑Taiwanese business community and media representatives. Through several expert inputs, first‑hand accounts from industry leaders, and a panel discussion, we explored the major trends and challenges that will shape Taiwan’s economy in the coming year. Read more about the Outlook highlights below. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this event a success!

I also had the honor of presenting the results of the newest Business Confidence Survey 2025/26 together with Mr. Frank Grunert, President and CEO of Siemens Taiwan, and Mr. Mark Raine, CEO and President of Mercedes-Benz Taiwan. Read on for insights into how German companies in Taiwan are navigating business performance, investment decisions, and where their main opportunities and challenges lie in the year ahead.

Although we wrapped up the Economic Outlook successfully, the GTO Events Calendar remains busy in the months ahead. I will be traveling to Germany and touring the country in a series of meeting formats organized by the German Chambers of Commerce (IHKs). See below for more details and how to register for a free one‑on‑one consultation on exploring the Taiwanese market.

On April 23, we will be co‑hosting the 23rd German‑Taiwanese Joint Business Council Meeting at the DIHK Headquarters in Berlin, so save the date and stay tuned for details. And for those of you who will be in Berlin next week, I invite you to attend the Taiwan Tech Talks at the Taipei Representative Office. I will be giving a keynote on economic ties between Taiwan and Germany amid geopolitical challenges.

Our market entry division is still accepting registrations for an e‑mobility delegation to Taiwan taking place from June 8 – 12. Spread the word about this unique opportunity for German suppliers of EV‑related parts, charging infrastructure, or battery technologies to learn about the dynamic Taiwanese market.

And as always, we leave you with recommended reading to keep you informed. Our colleague at Germany Trade & Invest, Dr. Jürgen Maurer, has published another highly topical article on the rapid transformation of the data‑center landscape and related innovations in energy efficiency and cooling technologies. In this week’s news roundup, read about Taiwan’s strong year‑on‑year growth in export orders, regional energy‑supply adjustments triggered by the war in the Middle East, a new MOU signed between ITRI and a U.K. company on space collaboration, and new investments by polarizer manufacturer Cheng Mei in semiconductor materials.

All the best for the upcoming week.

Read the Latest GTO Case Study on the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG)

The Supply Chain Due Diligence Act or Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetz (LkSG) obligates German companies to actively and comprehensively monitor their supply chain for compliance with key human rights and environmental due diligence obligations. The newest GTO Case Study from December 2025 offers a comprehensive overview of potential risks that may arise when manufacturing products or providing services in Taiwan in connection with the LkSG. It uses official statistics, current media articles and interviews as a basis.

Relevant findigs include cases of forced labor of adults and minors in deep-sea fishing, small and medium-sized electronics factories, and the private care sector. Those affected are primarily individuals who have been trafficked to Taiwan for the purpose of forced labor and/or are residing illegally in Taiwan or are not officially registered. In addition, there are issues such as inadequate working conditions, discrimination against minorities, improper handling of hazardous materials, and other forms of environmental pollution.

Outside of work, she likes to be part of volunteer engagement. She is active with the Refugee Law Clinic Düsseldorf, involved in her local UNICEF group, and recently joined GrundGesetzVerstehen e.V. — a pro bono initiative developing innovative teaching concepts on constitutional law.

In her free time, she enjoys classic long German walks with friends and reading a good book.

Over the coming months, Vivienne will support our Events and Government Affairs team in organizing delegations, events, and research activities.

Read the Latest GTAI Article on the Boom in AI Data Centers and Energy Efficiency

The AI boom is driving up global demand for computing power, with data center capacity expected to double by 2030 to 163 gigawatts, according to estimates by Bain & Company. US tech giants are leading this expansion with massive investments in new data centers, primarily in North America. At the same time, the global trend toward data sovereignty is accelerating the build-out of digital infrastructure worldwide, with substantial new investments in Europe and Asia.

Modern AI data centers require significantly higher power densities than traditional cloud facilities. As a result, energy consumption and energy efficiency requirements are rising sharply. Many countries are beginning to introduce minimum standards for Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and are mandating the use of renewable or carbon-neutral energy sources. This is opening up new market opportunities for German companies, particularly in sustainable data center development and energy supply technologies.

Large data centers are also deploying evaporation-based cooling systems, which are energy-efficient but extremely water-intensive. German companies such are well positioned to benefit from this trend as they invest in new production capacity for liquid cooling systems. As power density increases, so does the need for highly efficient cooling. Traditional air cooling is reaching its physical limits, prompting a shift toward liquid cooling technologies such as direct-to-chip and immersion cooling.

New Manual Control from igus Speeds Up Prototype Development

The new drylin DLE-CU-9 manual control unit from igus allows engineers to test electric linear systems with stepper motors within minutes and without programming. By removing the need for complex wiring, controllers, or IT systems, it speeds up prototype development and machine commissioning, providing a convenient, ready-to-use solution.

Designed for simplicity and portability, the handheld controller is compact, lightweight, and easy to operate. Users only need to connect power and a stepper motor, then select current and voltage settings. Features such as auto-tuning, adjustable speed control, and forward/reverse motion make the device accessible even to users without electrical engineering expertise.

Beyond testing, the DLE-CU-9 can function as a full motor controller for simple automation tasks, eliminating the need for control cabinets or external systems. This helps companies reduce setup time and lower investment costs, while enabling quick and flexible machine operation in applications like conveyor belt control.

Export Orders Surge 60% Year-on-Year, Data Show

Taiwan’s export orders surged 60.1 percent year‑on‑year in January to a record US$76.9 billion, marking the 12th straight month of double‑digit growth and driven by booming demand for AI, high‑performance computing, electronic components, and ICT products such as servers. Traditional sectors also expanded, partly due to last year’s low comparison base. Machinery orders rose sharply on high‑tech capacity expansion, while plastics, rubber, metals, and chemicals all saw gains.

February orders are expected to grow 9 to 12.9 percent, supported by strong AI momentum, though risks from the Iran conflict, rising fuel costs, and inflation could weigh on global demand and pressure local petrochemical industries in coming months.

Asia Scrambles for Alternatives to Oil and Gas

Asia is scrambling for alternative oil and LNG supplies after Iranian attacks shut Qatar’s main export plant and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, halting crude and LNG flows and leaving tankers stranded in the Persian Gulf. Buyers in China, Japan, India, Taiwan and South Korea are requesting early cargoes and turning to the US, Australia, Africa and regional stockpiles, while firms with take‑or‑pay contracts seek replacement LNG.

Taiwan says its LNG reserves cover needs through March, but prolonged conflict could drain inventories, raise inflation, disrupt supply chains and pressure petrochemical and plastics industries across Asia.

Taiwan’s Cheng Mei to Expand Semiconductor Packing Materials Production

Cheng Mei Materials Technology is moving into semiconductor packaging materials, investing over NT$2.2 billion and aiming for mass production in 2028. The polarizer maker, facing revenue declines and rising costs, is shifting toward higher‑value automotive and wearable displays while developing films and tapes for advanced chip packaging.

Taiwan holds 55% of global assembly capacity but imports most high‑end materials, creating an opportunity for domestic production as AI and HPC demand grow. The firm is also investing NT$1.87 billion in lithography materials and upgrading equipment and cleanrooms.
