Dear Subscriber,
Happy Monday from Taipei!
As we welcome the start of June, we’re also celebrating Pride Month — a time to embrace diversity, inclusion, and equal rights.
Did you know? Taiwan was the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019 and continues to be a regional leader in LGBTQ+ rights. Taipei also hosts one of the largest Pride parades in Asia, attracting tens of thousands each year. Let’s continue to support safe, inclusive spaces — for everyone, everywhere.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to invite you to our German Riesling Night 2025, taking place next Thursday (June 12) at Guang Yi In Time Restaurant in Taipei’s Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. In collaboration with German winery Peter Mertes, the evening offers exquisite wines, a gourmet buffet, and a relaxed indoor-outdoor setting perfect for summer networking. Dress code? Summer chic. Seats are limited, so make sure to register now!
We’re also proud to be represented at this year’s IHK Außenwirtschaftstag NRW in Mönchengladbach. Our colleague Linda Blechert will be on site to spotlight Taiwan’s evolving business landscape and new cooperation opportunities.
In this edition, you’ll find a quick update in our GTO News section, where the latest Fitch Report shares key insights into Taiwan’s economic outlook for Q3. Be sure to also explore our Fair Trade News and take a look at our brand-new section — AHK Network News — where we highlight global activities across the AHK network, starting with an upcoming webinar on tapping into international tenders from our colleagues in the Philippines.
And of course, we’re rounding things off with more exciting developments from Taiwan in our Taiwan News section.
Enjoy the read — and Happy Pride Month! 🌈
Warm regards,
Dr. Eva Langerbeck

The location of the vineyard is essential for the development of aromatic Riesling grapes. In the town of Bernkastel-Kues, right in the heart of the picturesque Mosel Valley in south-western Germany, the mixture of fertile soil, steep slopes and ample sun exposure allows for the growth of especially flavorful Riesling. No wonder it has long been home to some of the most sought-after vineyards in Germany. Our partner, family-owned vineyard Peter Mertes, have been growing wine in the region since 1924 and currently occupy around 100 hectares of land along the Mosel and Saar rivers, including some of the best Riesling growing sites in the country for instance the world-famous “Wehlener Sonnenuhr”

Profiting from Tenders for Market Entry in Developing and Emerging Countries |
|
|
Successfully participating in tenders can be a rewarding opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises to tap into new markets. However, a number of aspects must be considered in order to approach the topic strategically and minimize costs and efforts. Especially when it comes to multilateral donors such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), German consultants and suppliers must prepare thoroughly to participate successfully in tenders.
There is still considerable potential for increasing German participation in ADB tenders: While Germany is a founding member of the ADB and holds a 4.3 percent capital share, German companies only rarely succeed in securing contracts through ADB tenders. Participants of this webinar will gain insights into effective approaches to ADB procurement and have the chance to establish valuable initial contacts.
Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) will provide an overview of how the tendering business works in general and how you can stay informed about a wide range of procurement opportunities. Representatives from the ADB will present detailed information about the ADB's procurement processes and contract awards. Finally, German companies that have already successfully participated in ADB tenders will share their experiences to round off the event.
The webinar series is organized by the Agency for Business and Economic Development (AWE) in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the OAV – German Asia-Pacific Business Association, Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI) and the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Export Momentum and Stimulus Package Could Stabilize Economy
Despite declining business sentiment across manufacturing, services, and construction in April, the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research (TIER) remains optimistic. According to TIER President Chang Chien-yi, early-year export momentum and a proposed NT$410 billion (approx. US$13.7 billion) stimulus package could help cushion the slowdown. TIER forecasts GDP growth of 3% for 2025.
Risks remain, particularly regarding potential U.S. tariffs on ICT and semiconductor products under a Section 232 investigation. Chang warned that higher costs could ripple through the entire supply chain. However, he noted that recent delays to planned EU tariffs suggest initial fears may have been premature, and April’s dip might already be behind us.

Bilingual Initiative Expands to Night Markets and Local Businesses
Taiwan’s National Development Council (NDC) is accelerating its bilingual policy by targeting everyday environments like night markets and small businesses. The initiative supports President Lai Ching-te’s vision of making Taiwan more internationally competitive and attractive for foreign professionals.
With rising tourist foot traffic, the NDC is piloting scalable bilingual solutions at venues such as Taipei’s Ningxia Night Market, offering vendors AI tools and training to improve English communication. The goal: to create immersive bilingual spaces that enhance visitor experience and local engagement.
Upcoming efforts include English-language cultural markets in Taitung and expanded bilingual access to public services and local events. Ultimately, the NDC aims to attract 400,000 international professionals by building a more inclusive and globally connected society.

TSMC Becomes Most Widely Held Stock on Taiwan’s Stock Market
TSMC has overtaken all other listed companies to become the most widely held stock in Taiwan, now boasting over 1.8 million shareholders. According to Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corporation data, 660,000 new investors joined between June 2024 and May 2025 — a surge driven largely by retail investors purchasing odd-lot shares.
During this period, TSMC’s share price rose by over 15%, from NT$839 to NT$967, adding NT$3.3 trillion (approx. US$111 billion) to its market capitalization, which now exceeds NT$25 trillion. Most new shareholders hold fewer than 1,000 shares, reflecting growing participation from individual investors.
The company continues to serve as a cornerstone of the global semiconductor industry, supplying major tech players like Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft. Analysts suggest investor confidence remains high, with many retail buyers gradually accumulating shares as a long-term strategy.

UMC Prioritizes Strategic Growth Over Middle East Expansion
United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has opted not to pursue semiconductor development projects in the Middle East. According to CFO Liu Chi-tung, the company is focusing on value-added partnerships and stable expansion markets such as Singapore, citing geopolitical neutrality and long-term strategic alignment. UMC continues to deepen cooperation with Intel in the U.S., particularly around 12 nm process technologies that avoid the need for EUV equipment. Mass production is expected by 2027. While no new fabs are planned in Japan beyond the current Mie Prefecture site, UMC is actively seeking new clients and partners.
In China, fabs in Suzhou and Xiamen are running at over 75% utilization. However, Liu noted that broader collaboration is increasingly constrained by global geopolitical tensions and cross-border regulatory hurdles. He also flagged currency risks, warning that a 1% appreciation of the Taiwan dollar could reduce gross margins by 0.4 percentage points. UMC reported NT$232.3 billion (approx. US$7.76 billion) in revenue in 2024 and will distribute NT$2.85 per share in dividends, reflecting continued financial resilience.
