Welcome!

Dear Subscriber,

After a rainy weekend, we’re looking forward to one of our favorite summer networking events: Riesling Night on June 12! Enjoy crisp white wine and connect with new business partners in a relaxed atmosphere. Registrations have picked up since last week, so be sure to save your spot while seats are still available!

Speaking of networking — we’re excited to announce this year’s Oktoberfests. Yes, you read that right: we’ll be hosting two events in 2025 — one in Taipei on October 23 and one in Taichung on October 24. Mark your calendars for our biggest networking highlights of the year. More details coming soon!

Time flies, and next week already brings our Healthcare Conference on Tuesday, May 20. Only a few seats remain, so if you’re interested in connecting with key players from the German and Taiwanese medtech sectors, now’s the time to register! This full-day event — funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the Market Entry Programme — features expert talks and B2B matchmaking focused on digital health innovation.

Another upcoming highlight: our 2025 Saxony Semiconductor Industry Delegation, scheduled for June 16–19. If your company is part of Taiwan’s semiconductor supply chain, don’t miss this opportunity to explore Saxony’s excellent investment landscape and industry prospects.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) and the Maritime Technology Innovation Centre (MTIC) to our office. Meanwhile, in Germany, our colleagues supported Taiwanese companies exhibiting at LEARNTEC, Europe’s leading EdTech trade fair. And speaking of trade fairs — early bird tickets are now available for CMS Berlin 2025 (September 23–26), one of the world’s top events for cleaning and facility management.

We also received important updates from our headquarters: the latest AHK World Business Outlook has been published, showing a sharp decline in the global economic expectations of German companies. Check out our DIHK News section for a summary and find the full report on our website. A big thank-you to all participating companies for their valuable feedback!

Finally, we’ve received updates from our Business Alliance members BASF and igus. For the latest insights into Taiwan’s economy, don’t miss our Taiwan News section.

Happy reading — and we look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events!

Meeting with MIRDC and MTIC

Last Wednesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) and the Maritime Technology Innovation Centre (MTIC) to our office.

Our team, including Ms. Linda Blechert, General Manager, DEinternational Taiwan Ltd., Mr. Nico Cron, Senior Manager Market Entry, and Mr. Philipp Molz, Manager Market Entry, met with Ms. Cindy Tsai, Project Manager at MIRDC, Mr. William Lin, Industry Researcher at MTIC, and Ms. Anne Kuo, Deputy Administrator at MTIC.

We had an insightful exchange about MTIC’s core mission. MTIC was established to become one of the leading training centers for marine and offshore professionals in the Asia-Pacific region. MIRDC also introduced us to their broader innovation landscape, which aligns especially well with our focus areas — healthcare, sustainability, green energy, and aerospace — where we see strong potential for future collaboration.

A big thank you to MIRDC and MTIC for the inspiring discussion. We’re excited about what lies ahead!

BASF’s OASE® Blue Supports CCAT in Carbon Capture and Storage Project at Taiwan Power Plant

BASF has signed a license agreement with Carbon Cap Applications Technology Co. (CCAT) to provide its OASE® blue gas treatment technology for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at the Taichung Power Plant Carbon Reduction Technology Park, operated by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), Taiwan’s largest electricity provider.

This collaboration combines CCAT’s advanced technology and engineering solutions with BASF’s proven OASE® blue carbon capture technology. The project, which was awarded and started up at the end of 2023, is expected to capture 2,000 tons of CO2 annually, according to Taipower’s design and planning requirements. If successful, Taipower will assess the feasibility of developing a new demonstration plant for commercial operation, with the next phase aiming to capture one million tons of CO2 per year. The CO2 captured in the current phase will be sequestered at the Taichung Power Plant, while the possibility of sequestration in Taiwan’s offshore strata will be evaluated in the next phase.

Record Participation in the igus Plastic Bearing Competition Manus

Over 613 applicants from 38 countries would like to win the golden manus award with their polymer plain bearing projects. This record participation in the manus award 2025 from igus impressively demonstrates the innovative power and creativity of engineers around the world. The competition recognises the creative use of plastic bearings in machines, systems and vehicles, with a focus on the economic, ecological and social benefits. With 613 registrations from 38 countries, the competition noted an increase of almost 28% compared to 2023.

Jury selects winners in four categories in February with up to €5,000 euros prize money

The manus award jury met on 19th February 2025 to vote on the winners. "In our assessments, we place particular emphasis on creativity and the courage to question established industry standards for metallic plain bearings and replace them with plastic alternatives," emphasises Vogel. "At the same time, the applications also provide great inspiration for other companies to switch from metal to plastic." The jury presents four awards: the golden manus with €5,000 prize money, the silver manus (€2,500), the bronze manus (€1,000) and the green manus for a particularly sustainable solution (€3,000). The winners will be officially announced on 27 March 2025. For the first time, the award ceremonies will take place on the winners' premises this year.

AHK World Business Outlook Spring 2025: Global Mood Tilts

The global economy is faltering – there is no sign of a recovery in German foreign trade. As the current AHK World Business Outlook (WBO) Spring 2025 shows, the economic expectations of German companies around the globe have collapsed.

Instead of optimism, there is disillusionment: German companies abroad are facing deteriorating conditions and growing uncertainty in almost all regions of the world. The trade policy upheavals in the USA in particular are putting pressure on the global economy.

"The USA's new trade policy is hitting German companies at their foreign locations with full force," warns Volker Treier, Head of Foreign Trade at the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK). "The US trade policy and the international reactions to it are sending shockwaves through the global economy – investors are losing confidence in reliable framework conditions. As a result, investments are being postponed or cancelled altogether, and traditional trade relations are being reassessed."

Exports Soared 29.9 Percent Last Month

Taiwan’s exports last month soared 29.9 percent year-on-year to US$48.66 billion, the second-highest on record, thanks to front-loading demand for tech products used in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing, after Washington announced a 90-day respite for its “reciprocal” tariffs, the Ministry of Finance said yesterday.

Last month’s export momentum proved stronger than expected and is to continue this month, with an annual increase of 15 percent to 20 percent, Department of Statistics Director-General Beatrice Tsai (蔡美娜) said. “Front-loading demand and rush orders are evident across sectors,” Tsai said. “The 90-day pause prompted firms on the sidelines to actively build inventory.”

CPI Rises 2.03 Percent on Dining-out, Fruit Prices

Taiwan's consumer price index (CPI) increased 2.03 percent year-on-year last month, mainly due to increases in food and fruit prices, as well as dining-out costs, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said on May 7.

It was the second consecutive month that the nation’s CPI surpassed the central bank’s 2 percent target, but the inflationary gauge decelerated from the previous month’s 2.32 percent, the agency’s data showed. Food prices rose 4.34 percent annually, with the costs of fruit growing 25.26 percent. Meat prices rose 4.46 percent, and those for cereal products such as bread and cakes grew 3.38 percent, the agency said in a report.

China Airlines Reports Record High Q1 Net Profit

China Airlines (CAL), one of the leading international carriers in Taiwan, has posted its highest ever first quarter net profit, which it attributed to strong passenger demand during the Lunar New Year holiday and the winter vacation.

In a statement, CAL said Friday that it recorded NT$4.66 billion (US$154 million) in net profit in the January-March period, a 36.54 percent year-on-year increase, with earnings per share of NT$0.69, compared with NT$0.51 a year earlier.

In the first quarter, CAL generated NT$52.77 billion in consolidated sales, up from NT$48.65 billion a year earlier.
