Welcoming German Scholarship Holders
|
|
|
Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of German scholarship holders from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) who are currently studying in East Asia. As part of a self-organized interdisciplinary excursion to Taiwan, the group is exploring the island’s economy, society, and geopolitical context in East Asia.
During their visit, our colleagues Linda Blechert and Nico Cron provided insights into our office’s work and the involvement of German businesses in Taiwan, helping the group gain a deeper understanding of German-Taiwanese economic relations.
We’re always happy to exchange ideas and share perspectives with the next generation of global professionals!

Taiwan's Economic Indicators Show Stable Growth in February
In February 2025, Taiwan's leading economic indicators flashed a yellow-red light, signaling a warming economy, according to the National Development Council (NDC). The composite score rose by two points from January to 37, indicating robust economic activity. Improvements were noted in manufacturing sales, wholesale sectors, retail, and food and beverage sales, all flashing a red light.
The NDC attributed this positive trend to increased demand for AI technology, the competitive edge of Taiwan's semiconductor industry, and growth in exports and investment. However, the council advised monitoring international geopolitical and economic policies closely, as they could impact ongoing economic growth.

Taiwan’s Economy Strengthens Amid AI-Driven Growth
Taiwan’s economy showed signs of warming in February 2025, with strong demand for AI chips boosting the manufacturing sector, according to the National Development Council (NDC). The composite economic index rose by two points to 37, signaling a “yellow-red” light — the second month in a row of moderately strong growth.
AI-related demand also fueled increased imports of semiconductor equipment and factory expansion. Despite cautious optimism from officials, the leading index rose for the fourth consecutive month, indicating continued momentum in Taiwan’s economic outlook.

Chun Yuan Steel Forecasts Stronger Outlook for 2025
Chun Yuan Steel expects the steel market to improve in 2025, with orders already secured through 2026. The company plans to expand its non-engineering segment, including steel supply for robotic arms in manufacturing plants and components for the automotive industry. Major clients include Toyota, Ford, Yulon Motor, and the Yulon-Foxconn electric vehicle venture. Engineering-related projects—such as electronics factories and public infrastructure—remain an important revenue stream.
Despite long-standing U.S. tariffs, Taiwan’s steel exports to the U.S. have shown steady growth, rising from 1.46 million tonnes in 2019 to 1.6 million tonnes in 2024. Chun Yuan’s President Hung Shih-liang believes the latest U.S. tariff measures may further increase demand for Taiwanese steel. Last year, the company recorded NT$21.83 billion (US$715.4 million) in revenue, with non-engineering orders accounting for 60% of sales.
