Welcome!

Dear Subscriber,

Happy Monday from Taipei!

As we approach the end of March, it’s hard to believe how quickly the first quarter of 2025 has passed. Taiwan remains full of momentum, with strong international engagement and exciting developments across business and policy.

This Wednesday marks the long-anticipated NRW Business & Technology Forum in Taipei! Focused on media content and digital innovation, the forum will bring together top minds from North Rhine-Westphalia and Taiwan. Haven’t registered yet? Now’s your last chance to sign up and join the discussion!

Looking ahead to early April, our upcoming seminar in Taichung will explore Saxony’s semiconductor industry and investment landscape. The event brings together key players from both regions to discuss new opportunities in one of the world’s most dynamic tech sectors.

We also look back at a successful sustainability visit to REMONDIS Taiwan and a lively investment networking dinner hosted by NRW.Global Business. Additionally, Militzer & Münch’s market entry marks another strategic step for German companies in Taiwan, and our team continues to grow with new intern support and exchanges with the German Institute Taipei.

Further in this issue: insights from GTAI on Taiwan’s role in global electronics procurement, new business opportunities, and job openings. We also introduce the upcoming Taiwanese-German Conference on Healthcare Applications, taking place in May and funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action under the market entry programme. The event will highlight pharmaceutical and biotech collaboration between Germany and Taiwan. And for those eager to grow their business network, don’t miss the All-Chambers Taipei Connect on April 24 – an excellent opportunity to connect with professionals from across industries.

Wishing you a productive and inspiring start to the week!

Advancing Sustainability with German Expertise: Our Visit to REMONDIS Taiwan

On March 12, our colleagues Dr. Eva Langerbeck and Levin Chiang together with Dr. Jürgen Maurer (GTAI) visited REMONDIS Taiwan’s plastic recycling plant in Fangyuan Township, Changhua County. With nearly 90 years of expertise, REMONDIS is a global leader in recycling and waste management, integrating German technology into Taiwan’s circular economy.

During the visit, we gained insights into REMONDIS' commitment to sustainability, from plastic recycling and solid recovered fuel (SRF) manufacturing to biogas facilities. Their NTD 1.8 billion plant is setting new standards in Taiwan, processing 50,000 tons of plastic waste annually and achieving nearly 90% automation to drive net-zero carbon emissions.

A big thank you to Jim Tai, General Manager, Philipp Moede, Director of Operations, Mary Yu, HR & Legal CAO and Hans Lin, CTO, for providing us with an in-depth look into REMONDIS’ efforts in transforming waste into valuable resources. We look forward to continued collaboration in promoting sustainable solutions!

Successful NRW – Taiwan Investment Networking Dinner

On March 18, 2025, NRW.Global Business hosted the Invest in NRW Networking Dinner, supported by the German Trade Office Taipei, bringing together Taiwanese companies and investment experts for an insightful evening on business expansion opportunities in Germany’s largest economic region.

Susanne Baumann, Project Manager for Business Development Taiwan at NRW.Global Business, opened the evening by highlighting North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) as a key investment destination, emphasizing its innovation-driven economy, strong talent pool, and prime location in Europe. Expert contributions from Pascal Thien-Ah-Koon (Ecovis) and Katherine Chiang (Synology) further enriched the discussion by sharing practical experiences and investment strategies.

From our side, Linda Blechert welcomed the guests and provided an overview of German-Taiwanese economic relations, reinforcing the strong business ties and opportunities between the two regions.

With NRW already home to over 100 Taiwanese companies, this event served as an excellent platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and new business opportunities. We look forward to continuing to support Taiwanese businesses in their expansion to Germany!

Meet Our New DEinternational Taiwan Ltd. Market Entry Service Intern, Max Chuang!

With a strong academic background in diplomacy and international law, Max is about to graduate from National Chengchi University. His passion for international relations led him to Germany, where he spent his year abroad studying political science at the University of Heidelberg as a Baden-Württemberg Scholarship recipient and further improving his German language skills.

Fascinated by Taiwan-Germany economic and diplomatic relations, Max sees great potential in the dynamic trade, technology, and sustainability collaborations between the two economies. Through this internship, he aims to gain hands-on experience in market expansion and contribute to strengthening these important ties.

Taiwan Remains Key Hub for Global Electronics Procurement

Taiwan continues to play an indispensable role in global electronics supply chains, producing semiconductors, microcontrollers, GPUs, and data center servers for global markets. The country's leadership in high-end chip manufacturing, particularly for AI and advanced computing, has been further highlighted by supply chain disruptions during the Covid pandemic and growing global demand for artificial intelligence applications.

The electronics and ICT industries remain Taiwan's main economic drivers, accounting for nearly 42% of the island's total industrial output. According to Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute, production in these sectors is expected to grow by 7.5% in 2025, following a 5.4% increase in 2024. The drivers of this growth will be the manufacturers of chips and servers, as well as computer makers, as businesses and consumers upgrade to more powerful AI-enabled laptops.

Despite Taiwan's strong performance in global markets, Germany's imports of Taiwanese electronics declined significantly in 2024 due to weaker economic conditions. German companies such as Infineon, Elmos, Bosch, and Siemens, which rely on Taiwanese components, reduced their procurement volumes by 31%, with imports of integrated circuits falling to $1 billion. In contrast, Taiwan's overall electronics export orders continued to grow globally.

Looking ahead, Taiwan's electronics industry is navigating ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions and changing global supply chains as some Taiwanese companies shift production from China to Southeast Asia, Mexico, or back to Taiwan. Despite these geopolitical uncertainties, Taiwan maintains its competitive edge with a highly developed electronics ecosystem and a well-established network of foundries and component manufacturers that support global technological developments.

Read more about Taiwan’s electronics sector (in German).
