DIHK Publishes the AHK Climate Protection Compass 2024 - Climate Protection Needs Reliable Framework Conditions |
|
|
German companies see substantial business opportunities in climate protection worldwide – but only if the necessary framework conditions are in place. This is the key finding of the latest AHK Climate Protection Compass 2024. The progress report is based on a survey conducted by the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) and the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs), polling over 2,200 German businesses in 43 countries."In terms of climate protection, companies are often the trailblazers, as they are the ones who must implement measures first," explains Volker Treier, DIHK's Head of Foreign Trade. "Many of our businesses see significant opportunities here – but only if the conditions are right. Unfortunately, this is often not the case." The survey results reveal that in some countries, awareness of the need for significant increases in renewable energy has improved compared to two years ago. Nearly a quarter of the businesses surveyed (24 percent) confirm the presence of a credible climate strategy in their host countries, up from one-fifth in the previous survey. Nevertheless, a central problem remains. "At many locations, the right structures and incentives are missing to drive real transformation," says Treier.

Taiwan to Launch Its Carbon Pricing System in 2026
|
|
|
Taiwan will introduce carbon fees to reduce emissions and encourage businesses to adopt climate-friendly practices. From 2025, companies will be required to report their CO2 emissions, and from 2026, they will pay a general carbon fee rate of NT$300 (around US$ 9.35) per ton of CO2. Enterprises that meet certified emission reduction targets will qualify for reduced preferential rates. Initially, the carbon fee will apply to industries emitting more than 25,000 tons of CO2 per year, including the energy, chemical, cement, and steel sectors, which account for 54% of Taiwan's emissions.
Furthermore, Taiwan has set up a CO2 credit trading platform, which allows companies to offset emissions by purchasing carbon credits. The requirement to offset some of their emissions already applies to new factories and commercial buildings.
These measures also help Taiwan maintain competitiveness in global markets, as an agreement with the EU allows carbon fees paid on products in Taiwan to count towards the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), starting in 2026. The carbon fee is an important step in Taiwan's broader environmental strategy, balancing climate action with economic growth.
In addition to carbon pricing, the government's carbon management strategy includes expanding renewable energy, improving energy efficiency and implementing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, aiming for a 23-25% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
For more information about Taiwan's plan to reduce emissions, follow this link to read the article in German.

Taiwan Increases Tax-Deductible Allowances for 2025
The Ministry of Finance (MOF) announced that the annual tax-deductible allowance for basic living expenses per person will increase by NT$8,000 to NT$210,000 for 2025. This adjustment, benefiting 2.08 million households, aligns with the Taxpayer Rights Protection Act, ensuring individuals are not taxed on essential living expenses. Additionally, personal income tax exemptions will rise from NT$92,000 to NT$97,000, and standard tax deductions will increase from NT$124,000 to NT$131,000. These changes are expected to reduce government revenue by NT$2.6 billion.

Taiwan's 2024 GDP Growth Forecast Revised to 4.27%
Taiwan's GDP growth for 2024 has been revised upward to 4.27% from 3.9%, marking a potential three-year high, according to the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS). The adjustment reflects stronger-than-expected exports, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) demand, and steady domestic investments.
Exports, particularly in electronic components and communication products, are projected to grow 9.72% year-on-year, reaching US$474.5 billion. Meanwhile, investments, bolstered by semiconductor advancements, are expected to increase by 4.47%.
Despite positive drivers like wage hikes and a strong stock market, annual consumption growth was slightly lowered to 2.72%, constrained by stagnant population growth. Inflation pressures persist, with the 2024 consumer price index (CPI) forecast rising to 2.18%, though it is expected to moderate to 1.93% in 2025.
