Dear Subscriber,
Time flies; it has already been two months since I took up my position here in Taiwan. And I must say, Taiwan is a fantastic place to live. Beitou features beautiful scenery, the people have been very hospitable to me and my husband, and I have started to explore the intricacies of the Chinese language.
During the past eight weeks, I also had the pleasure of meeting representatives of long-term partners and Taiwanese ministries such as the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). I would like to express my sincere gratitude for their support, especially to MOFA for ensuring a smooth visa process and transition. Last week, we also had the honor of meeting Taoyuan City Mayor Chang San-Cheng together with Siemens President Frank Grunert and TRUMPF Managing Director Patrick Kemnitz. I am looking forward to more interesting meetings and further strengthening our German-Taiwanese economic ties.
Speaking of promoting our economic ties: Two delegations from Saxony and Bavaria will visit Taiwan this week, and SEMICON 2024 kicks off on Wednesday. We are proud to announce that this year’s Ger-man Pavilion at SEMICON has expanded by 40 percent from last year, now covering 126 square meters. Visit our Pavilion featuring 15 exhibitors at the Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1, Floor 1, for the latest insights into green manufacturing, heterogeneous integration, and AI-driven solutions “Made in Ger-many” in the semiconductor sector. See our TOP News section for more details.
Another interesting event will be our “Taiwanese-German Conference on Industry 4.0 Applications” at the Illume Taipei on October 22. The conference is part of a delegation trip of German companies to Taiwan, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action under the market development program. Besides the conference, we will also arrange individual B2B meetings for the nine German companies that will come to Taiwan to explore the local market. Registration for the con-ference is already open. See our TOP News for more information.
Make sure not to miss the biggest networking event in the German-Taiwanese business community: the GTO German Oktoberfest X German Business Day 2024 at the Illume Taipei on October 24. Seats and tables are selling well, so act quickly if you would like to join and enjoy authentic German food, beer, and music together with your colleagues and business partners. There are also two sponsorships avail-able that will make your company stand out.
Lastly, our colleague Dr. Jürgen Maurer, Director / Correspondent of GTAI Taiwan, recently published an interesting article that elaborates on how the government is intensifying its focus on cybersecurity and how it is bolstering the protection of critical infrastructure. You can find a summary of the article in our GTAI News section below.
Enjoy your week!
Kind regards,
Dr. Eva Langerbeck

Cybersecurity is a Top Priority in Taiwan |
|
|
In response to growing cyber threats, especially amid rising U.S.-China tensions, Taiwan is significantly intensifying its focus on cybersecurity. The government is investing heavily in both hardware and software solutions to protect critical infrastructure and enhance national resilience. Central to these efforts is the Ministry of Digital Affairs, established in 2022, which oversees the implementation of the National Information Security Development Plan and the Cyber Security Management Act, ensuring that both public and private sectors are equipped to handle evolving cyber threats.
Given Taiwan's high internet penetration and ongoing digital transformation, the country faces substantial vulnerabilities. To address these risks, the government is not only enhancing IT security infrastructure but also promoting research and development in cybersecurity technologies. Public-private partnerships are being strengthened, with incentives for companies to invest in information security, while international collaboration, such as with the German certification body DEKRA, is helping Taiwan develop robust cybersecurity standards.
