Review: Meeting with the Minister Of Economic Affairs

During last weeks meeting with Minister of Economic Affairs Jyh-Huei Kuo, our Executive Director, Dr. Eva Langerbeck, kicked off the discussions by congratulating Taiwan on winning its first Olympic gold medal in badminton!

The meeting was a fruitful exchange focused on attracting more talented STEM students to Taiwan. We aim to provide them with an opportunity to learn the local language and work culture, equipping them to contribute to TSMC and its German suppliers.

Dr. Langerbeck also expressed our office's eagerness to organize more seminars and discussions on German labor law and German-Taiwanse work culture exchange, preparing professionals for relocation to Germany as part of new investment projects. We're excited about the prospect of hosting more investment seminars and dinners to deepen cooperation.

In line with President Lai's focus on the “Five Trusted Industry Sectors 五大信賴產業”, both parties shared a commitment to strengthening partnerships, especially in areas of semiconductors and AI. Additionally, there was mutual interest in advancing "AI in health care/smart health care", addressing the challenges posed by aging populations in both countries.

We look forward to building on these discussions and driving forward innovative collaborations!

Review: Memorandum of Understanding Between Infineon and LITEON

We are happy to share the successful conclusion of a significant event in the technology sector, where Infineon and LITEON+ formalized their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, which our Executive Director Dr. Eva Langerbeck had the honour to witness. LITEON+, which is LITEON's accelerator program, is focused on nurturing innovation within technology startups.

The event was attended by key leaders, including Chiu Anson, President of LITEON Technology Corp, and Mr. Tan Chee How, Managing Director of Infineon Taiwan.

The event was also attended by Volker Heistermann, Managing Director of Mosaic Venture Lab, who plays a vital role in fostering tech innovation, and is a proud partner to LITEON+. In addition to the Infineon Country Manager, who brings valuable experience from his previous role in Malaysia, the Head of Research and Development from Infineon Germany was also present, bringing global expertise to this occasion.

The Memorandum of Understanding represents a major step forward in driving technological advancements and fostering innovation. We eagerly anticipate the impactful developments that will emerge from this strategic partnership.

Taiwan Hosts Post-Quantum Cyber Security Workshop

The third “PQC Standardization and Migration Workshop” took place at Academia Sinica on August 10, attracting over a hundred participants from government and industry. The workshop focused on the looming threat of quantum computing, expected to render current cryptographic systems obsolete within the next 10-15 years.

Experts, including Matthias Kannwisher of Chelpis Quantum Tech and Chang Pei-zen of ITRI, stressed the urgent need for industries and governments to adopt post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards. Academia Sinica’s Yang Bo-ying highlighted the accelerated timeline for cryptographic vulnerabilities and called for immediate preparations.

Google’s Sophie Schmeig emphasized the importance of widespread acceptance of PQC standards and expressed skepticism about the need for additional hardware support. Fraunhofer SG CEO, Michael Kasper, discussed the dual nature of quantum computing as both a threat and an opportunity, underscoring the need for thorough PQC migration and security planning.

During the Q&A session, there was debate over the practicality of quantum key distribution (QKD), with doubts raised about its effectiveness for most companies.

Taiwan Shares Take Biggest Plunge in History with TSMC Leading the Fall

Taiwan's stock market experienced its largest-ever drop on Monday, with the Taiex index plunging 1,807.21 points (8.35%) to 19,830.88. The decline was driven by global market volatility, particularly heavy losses in the U.S. markets, and fears of a potential U.S. recession.

The electronics sector was hardest hit, with TSMC falling 9.75%, contributing significantly to the overall market decline. Other tech stocks, including MediaTek and ASE Technology, also saw sharp drops.

Non-tech sectors weren't spared, with widespread losses across construction, financials, and other industries. Foreign investors sold a net NT$69.96 billion in shares, continuing the sell-off from the previous session. More volatility is expected, with the Taiex possibly testing lower levels soon.
