Review: GTO Wirtschaftsstammtisch & Machinery Panel Discussion

Last Tuesday, we were pleased to host our GTO Wirtschaftsstammtisch for the first time in Taichung! At the splendor Hotel Taichung, we welcomed around 50 guests from the machinery industry for a pleasant evening.

For this edition of the GTO Wirtschaftsstammtisch, we invited three speakers from machinery companies for a panel discussion. Mr. Phylex Ong, from Beckhoff Automation Taiwan 倍福自動化, Mr. Steven Lin from igus Taiwan 台灣易格斯, and Mr. Patrick Kemnitz from TRUMPF Taiwan (台灣創浦股份有限公司) discussed the importance of Taichung and its machinery cluster. The panelists also provided an overview of the current situation of the machinery industry, future trends, and upcoming trade fairs in 2024.

After the panel discussion, our guests enjoyed a delicious buffet and Erdinger beer in a relaxed atmosphere. During the dinner, the attendees had the chance to contact other industry representatives from Taichung and establish valuable contacts.

A big thank you to the three panelists and to the sponsor of this event, Millenia Commercial!

Thank you to everyone who joined and made this first Stammtisch in Taichung a memorable evening. We hope you had an amazing evening and would like to welcome you to one of our next events!

Taiwan's Economy Heats Up, Scholars Warn Export Risks Loom In Second Half

Taiwan's National Development Council (NDC) reported a "red light" economic indicator for June, which stands for strong economic activity for the first time since January 2022. This was driven by high semiconductor demand and increased server needs. However, experts warn that the biggest risk to Taiwan's economy in the second half of the year is exports.

Dachrahn Wu, CEO of National Central University's Research Center for Taiwan Economic Development, noted a 23% annual increase in June's exports, driven by AI demand. He warned about overinvestment in AI Stocks and a potential decline in U.S. consumer spending, which could impact Taiwan's exports. Wu also mentioned that a U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate cut might signal an economic downturn, with effects of demand taking three to sox months.

Tech-based Healthcare Sector Could Boost Taiwan's Economy

At the recent Healthy Aging Tech Expo, President Lai Ching-te highlighted Taiwan's potential to create a new economic path by leveraging its strengths in healthcare and technology. Lai emphasized that Taiwan could serve as a test market for innovative global tech applications, given its aging population, which faces significant healthcare needs.

With Taiwan expected to become a super-aged society by 2025, experts like Shen Jong-chin and Minister of Economic Affairs Kuo Jyh-huei underscored the importance of developing a technology-driven health industry. This sector could also boost medical tourism from nearby countries.

U.S. Senate Fails To Pass Bill With Tax Relief For Taiwanese Companies

The U.S. Senate failed to advance a tax reform package on Friday that included the United States-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act, which aimed to eliminate double taxation for some Taiwanese residents and companies.

If passed, the legislation would have allowed certain Taiwan residents to avoid U.S. taxes under specific conditions and lowered tax rates for Taiwanese companies operating in the U.S. It would also have granted the U.S. president the authority to negotiate a formal tax agreement with Taiwan.

Taiwanese leaders, including economics minister Kuo Jyh-huei and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim, strongly supported the bill, emphasizing its importance for Taiwanese businesses, particularly in the semiconductor industry. Despite passing in the House of Representatives earlier this year, the bill faced opposition in the Senate, primarily along party lines.

Experts Say UAV Market Is Key For Taiwan

According to experts, Taiwan's UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) or drone industry needs to tap into the global market to develop a self-sufficient combat drone sector. With defense analysts predicting a potential conflict by 2027 or 2032, Taiwan must decouple its drone supply chains to ensure wartime production capabilities.

The government aims to make Taiwan a UAV supply hub for global democracies, but this requires building a competitive export market. Taiwan's drone sector, valued at NT$2.86 billion in 2023, must scale up to compete globally.

Experts argue that government support and coordination with industrial partners are essential to overcome production challenges and establish Taiwan as a key player in the global drone market.
