Welcome!

Dear Subscriber,

“Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still.” When we came across this Taiwanese proverb this morning, we realised it beautifully captures the spirit of life and work and we wanted to share it with you. Progress, no matter how gradual, propels us forward and ensures we are always moving towards our goals. Do not give up, let us take one step at a time.

Philosophy aside, let's move from words to experiences. Last week's highlight was our delightful wine night, an unforgettable evening at our first Riesling Night. The rich palette of Peter Mertes’ Riesling white wine was the perfect refreshment for the upcoming summer season. For a more detailed insight into our wine night, check out our Top News.

We also had the pleasure of attending the 18th Silicon Saxony Day last Tuesday, a significant event celebrating the vibrant semiconductor industry in Saxony. With over 300 exhibitors and numerous attending companies, it was a major event in the tech sector. To read more about Silicon Saxony Day, please read the full article in our GTO News.

Moreover, we want to invite you to our Wirtschaftsstammtisch which will be held on July 30. This time we added two small twists to it: Firstly, it will take place in Taichung and secondly, it will feature a machinery panel discussion. Secure your ticket and sign up now. More information can be found in our GTO News.

Although our GTO soccer tournament was over a week ago, the excitement of the UEFA championship starting last weekend inspired us to relive our own action-packed highlights. We proudly secured third place in our tournament, and if you're as crazy about football as we are, check out our recap of the match in our GTO News.

We wish you a productive week despite the soaring temperatures. And remember, don’t let the air conditioning make you catch a cold! Stay cool and stay healthy.

Kind regards,

German Trade Office Taipei

Review: 2024 German Riesling Night with Peter Mertes

Last Friday, we hosted an unforgettable evening at our first Riesling Night, in partnership with Peter Mertes, Germany’s leading winery from the wine capital of Bernkastel-Kues. The event took place in the charming outdoor area of M Club Taipei on the banks of the Keelung River, where guests enjoyed the summer breeze, indulged in exquisite free-flowing wine, and savored a carefully curated buffet dinner.

Attendees relished the crisp and well-balanced flavors of Peter Mertes’ Riesling, the perfect refreshing white wine for the summer season. The relaxed ambiance and plentiful networking opportunities set the tone for a stylish summer kickoff.

The picturesque location Maritime Club Taipei (M Club) buzzed with energy. Guests, dressed in their best Hawaiian shirts and summer chic attire were ready for a delightful evening. We welcomed around 80 guests. The night was a special one as Peter Mertes celebrated its 100th anniversary. We also took a moment to bid a fond farewell to Germany Trade and Invest’s Director Taiwan and Philippines Mr. Alexander Hirschle.

The evening featured a wide selection of wines from Peter Mertes, which were a big hit among our guests. A delicious finger food buffet and a BBQ stand sent everyone to culinary heaven. The well-chosen playlist set a fantastic vibe. The cool outdoor venue, with its gentle breeze and beautiful decorations, enhanced the overall enjoyment, making it a night to remember.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for a memorable Riesling night. We hope you had a wonderful time and we look forward to organizing a similar event in the future!

Review: Silicon Saxony Day

Last Tuesday, were thrilled to be a part of the 18th Silicon Saxony Day, a significant event celebrating the vibrant semiconductor industry in Saxony. With over 300 exhibitors and numerous attending companies, this event is a hub for innovation and collaboration in the tech sector.

This year, we were proudly exhibiting at the Regions Island, joining representatives from six countries and regions. We were honored to be warmly welcomed by Mr. Thomas Kralinski, State Secretary of the Saxon State Ministry for Economy, Labour and Transport, Mr. Thomas Horn, CEO of Saxony Trade & Invest and Mr. Frank Bösenberg, Managing Director of Silicon Saxony. Our Acting Delegate of German Business and Head of the German Trade Office Taipei, Ms. Leonie Yang, presented our office’s mission to enhance economic and industrial partnerships between Taiwan and Germany.

Bringing a delegation of eight Taiwanese companies, we are excited to exchange semiconductor industry knowledge with European companies on-site. This event offered a fantastic opportunity for our companies to expand their business horizons and find valuable partnerships in Germany.

At the event's conclusion, Dr. Christian Koitzsch, President of ESMC, delivered a brilliant keynote on ESMC’s present and future. We are proud to be connected with this promising project, which is poised to benefit the entire European chip industry.

Our delegation continues its journey in Dresden, and we look forward to sharing more updates. Stay tuned!

Review: A Day to Remember – GTO Wins Bronze in Dramatic Semi-Final

We are still over the moon! Thrilled doesn't even begin to describe how we feel about winning third place last Friday on June 7. Our GTO players gave their all, leaving blood, sweat, and tears on the field. In a nail-biting semi-final against TRUMPF Taiwan, they proved their mettle and secured the bronze.

Our team may be young, with an average age of just 31, including two of our very own GTO interns, but they played with the heart and experience of seasoned pros. Scratches, wounds and even a mild concussion: Nothing could stop our GTO fighters from pushing through and contributing to our victory.

Our GTO Team is already gearing up for next year's tournament, and we promise to bring an even fiercer competition… Watch out, because in 2025 we are coming for the title!

Central Bank Upgrades Taiwan's GDP Growth Forecast for 2024

The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) announced that it has raised its forecast for Taiwan's gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 2024 to 3.77 percent from an earlier estimate of 3.22 percent made in March.

In a statement released after it wrapped up a quarterly policymaking meeting, the central bank said the export-oriented local economy has benefited from growing global demand for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence development.

But due to a relatively high comparison base last year, the central bank said Taiwan's GDP growth for the second half of this year is expected to lag behind the first half.

Amazon to Invest Billions in Taiwan Cloud Data Centers

Amazon plans to invest billions of U.S. dollars in cloud computing projects in Taiwan over the next 15 years, reports said.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud-computing arm of the tech giant, said it would launch a Taiwan infrastructure region by early 2025. The project will ensure that customers who want to keep their content inside the country can do so, the company said in a statement.

AWS quoted Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) as saying the investment would boost the growth of related supply chains, create job opportunities, and help sustainable development. He praised the company for providing innovative cloud services to local and international businesses.

Taiwan’s Semiconductor Output Value to Exceed NT$5 Trillion in 2024

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) said Taiwan’s semiconductor output value will exceed NT$5 trillion (US$154 billion) in 2024, marking a historic first.

At its semiconductor industry outlook conference on Wednesday, the ITRI’s Industrial Economics and Knowledge Center team discussed industry trends, per CNA. The institute said it expects Taiwan's economic performance to be steady and moderate.

The ITRI said due to easing inflation and rising demand, industries including consumer goods and semiconductors are returning to growth. The electronics industry, driven by AI, will see a growth rate of 11.09% due to the increased demand for advanced semiconductors, it added.
