Dear Subscriber,
on Mondays like these, coffee and laughter are equally essential for success. Let’s face the day with the humor and start the day with a big smile!
Speaking of smiles, we had lots of reasons to smile and be happy because last week our office had a lot of events and successes to celebrate. Our most outstanding event last week was our long-awaited delegation trip in the field of bicycles and two-wheelers, which was part of the Foreign Market Entry Programme funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action. If you want to read the full report on the week-long delegation trip, have a look at out our GTO News.
On the second day of the delegation, we hosted a special conference under the same theme. The conference aimed to create a platform for Taiwanese companies and manufacturers seeking new solutions, collaborations, and a better understanding of the German bicycle industry. You can find more detailed information about the conference in our GTO News as well.
Event wise, you have three more days to sign up for our joint seminar on the German and Dutch semiconductor landscape, in collaboration with the Netherlands Office Taipei. The registration deadline is on Thursday. Hurry up and go to our Top News to sign up.
Secondly, we are organizing an exclusive delegation trip to Germany’s innovation hub Baden-Württemberg this summer. If you are working for a Taiwanese machine tool company, you have the exclusive chance to participate! Read the full article in our Top News.
Last but not least, we want to invite you once again to our German Riesling Night with Peter Mertes, a promising evening full of free flowing white wine, networking opportunities and a lovely ambience. Don’t miss this wonderful wine night. The registration link can also be found in our Top News.
Laughter is the best medicine, especially on a Monday. Here’s to a day filled with chuckles! Wishing you seven days of joy, success and moments worth cherishing.

Review: Conference on Bicycles and Two-Wheelers
|
|
|
Last Tuesday, we hosted a fully booked conference on bicycles and two-wheelers. The conference was part of a delegation trip of German companies to Taiwan under the Foreign Market Entry Programme funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
The conference served as a platform for Taiwanese companies and manufacturers to gain a better understanding of the German bicycle industry. A total of 110 attendees were eager to explore new solutions and to foster collaborations.
Ms. Leonie Yang, Acting Delegate of German Business and Head of the German Trade Office Taipei/General Manager of DEinternational Taiwan Ltd., delivered her opening remarks alongside Mr. Pablo Ziller, Press Officer of the German Bicycle Industry Association, Mr. Thompson Su, Secretary General of the Taiwan Smart Electric Bicycle Association, and Mr. Patrick Chen, Chairman of the Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association. Dr. Jörg Polster, Director General of the German Institute Taipei, also sent his regards in a video message.
The two keynote speeches provided invaluable insights into the German bicycle industry. First, Mr. Ziller offered an overview of the German Bicycle Industry, meaning its current state and prospects. Afterwards, Mr. Barry Huang, General Manager of DSA Co., Ltd., talked about smart bicycle manufacturing, highlighting innovative approaches within the field.
The conference continued with three German company presentations. Mr. Mario Schmitz from IoT Venture GmbH, Daniel Groos from Microsport GmbH & Co KG, and Ulrich Preß from solos engineering GmbH shared their insights and visions for the future of the industry.
The highlight of the post-conference were several individual matchmaking sessions, which enabled Taiwanese participants to truly connect with the German companies.
We are curious to see where these new relationships are leading us to!

Review: Delegation Trip in the Bicycle Sector to Taiwan
|
|
|
Last Friday, our delegation trip in the bicycle and bicycle component sector came to a close. The delegation trip allowed three German companies to discover the Taiwanese bicycle market. Over the course of the past five days, IoT Venture GmbH, Microsport GmbH & Co KG, and solos engineering GmbH had the chance to meet potential business partners and explore new business opportunities.
Our journey began on Monday, when our Acting Delegate Ms. Leonie Yang kicked off the week together with Germany Trade and Invest’s Director Taiwan, Singapore, Asean, Asia-Pacific Mr. Alexander Hirschle by giving a briefing on the current state of Taiwan's economy and the local bicycle industry. Mr. Robort Wu, Chairman of the Taiwan Bicycle Association, also shared his insights into the Taiwanese bike industry.
The following day, we hosted our "German-Taiwanese Bicycle and Two-Wheeler Conference" in Taichung. The German company representatives showcased their innovations to Taiwanese businesses. Following these presentations, several individual company matchmaking sessions were held during a delicious networking lunch. In the afternoon, the delegates explored Taichung and its cultural sites.
As the week unfolded, the events became more extraordinary. Not only did we visit Bosch eBike Systems Asia Pacific and IDEAL Bike, but every company also had a detailed exchange on future cooperation with potential cooperation partners during B2B meetings in the remaining three days.
All in all, we were amazed to see how lively the exchange between our participants and their Taiwanese counterparts was. We thank all our cooperation partners and are grateful for every single person who made this event possible. We look forward to witnessing the fruits of these partnerships and are eager to support more German companies with their business endeavors in Taiwan!
The delegation trip was part of the Foreign Market Entry Programme funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action and was conducted in collaboration with the German Association of the Bicycle Industry (ZIV), the Taiwan Smart Electric Bicycle Association (TSEBA), and the Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builder’s Association (TMBA).

|
|
|
The UEFA European Football Championship is less than one month away! Taking place exactly one week after our very own GTO German Company Charity Soccer Tournament here in Taipei, this year’s UEFA will kick off in Munich.
Watching football with friends and family, ideally with a cold beverage in hand, is a widely appreciated part of German culture that draws people of all ages and backgrounds to the restaurants, cafés and beer gardens that broadcast the games. Did you know that for this purpose, the Brandenburg Gate in the heart of Berlin will transform into a huge football goal during summer, with green turf being rolled out in front of it to make space for 30,000 fans to watch and celebrate the European Championship together?
Accordingly, hopes for the German team to reach the finals are at an all-time high – with three UEFA European Championship titles under the belt and having made it into the top four on nine different occasions, the German national team definitely has the credentials to take the win on home turf – what do you think?

Taiwan Economy Outperformed ‘Little Dragons’ During Tsai Ing-wen Presidency
Taiwan’s economy grew by an average of 3.15% per year during the past eight years when Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) was president, outperforming the three other ”Little Dragons,” the government said.
The figures were included in an end-of-term report presented by the Cabinet at its final weekly meeting Thursday morning before resigning. On Monday, Lai Ching-te (賴清德) was sworn in, as will a new Cabinet headed by Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰).
In another achievement, Taiwan’s production of recycled energy has surged by 110% since 2016, per CNA. Furthermore, improvement of the investment climate, promotion of high tech, and a surge in exports has resulted in Taiwan’s gross domestic product (GDP) growing faster than that of rival regional economies Hong Kong, South Korea, and Singapore.

Northern Taiwan’s Presale Housing Increases on Better Market Sentiment
Presale housing projects in northern Taiwan for the sales season beginning on Monday next week total NT$213.46 billion (US$6.59 billion), a 17.2 percent pickup from a year earlier, as developers apparently emerge from monetary tightening and unfavorable policy measures, property research My Housing Monthly found.
It is the highest volume since 2021, when the government tightened property taxes, raised interest rates and banned transfers of presale house purchase agreements to slow capital flows to the property market and curb house price hikes, the magazine’s spokesman Chen Ping-chen (陳炳辰) said.
The change in sentiment has to do with Taiwan’s improving economy and ongoing rallies on the local bourse, which lends support to a wealth effect, Chen said.

Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Healthy Growth Expected, Expert Says
Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA) President Wu Chih-yi (吳志毅) said that the semiconductor industry is poised for continued healthy growth.
Wu attended the “2024 Semiconductor and Industry Innovation Forum” where he talked about the state of the country’s semiconductor industry, per CNA. The president said that many countries are striving to develop their semiconductor sectors.
“However, building an industry cluster requires more than just investing in wafer fabs or purchasing equipment to produce 3nm technology,” Wu said. “Taiwan has taken 50 years to establish its semiconductor industry chain, while other countries would need at least 20 to 30 years to build such a chain.”

Net profit surged to NT$22 billion (US$678.7 million) last quarter, from NT$12.83 billion a year earlier, as Hon Hai booked a non-operating loss of NT$4.24 billion, an improvement from NT$20.12 billion in the first quarter of last year. A major portion of its non-operating loss came from Sharp’s large flat-screen business Sakai Display Products Corp.
