Taiwan to Remain No. 2 in Chip Capacity

Taiwan is forecast to retain its position as having the second-largest semiconductor capacity in the world this year, with production capacity set to increase more than 4 percent from a year earlier, the global semiconductor trade association SEMI said last week.

The global semiconductor industry is expected to enjoy a recovery in demand after a slump last year, as many countries are coming up with incentives to encourage production expansion by building new wafer foundry plants and introducing new equipment, SEMI global chief marketing officer and Taiwan president Terry Tsao (曹世綸) said in a statement.

SEMI’s latest World Fab Forecast report said global semiconductor capacity is expected to rise 6.4 percent this year and surpass 30 million wafers per month to a new high after rising 5.5 percent to 29.6 wafers per month last year.

Car Sales in Taiwan in 2023 Hit Highest Level for 18 Years

Car sales for 2023 in Taiwan reached the highest level in 18 years, rising 11 percent from 2022, partly on the back of the government providing subsidies to encourage the replacement of old models, according to statistics compiled by local transportation authorities.

In addition, deferred deliveries from 2022 due to a chip shortage, the debut of new models and an increase in the arrival of imported cars also pushed up 2023 sales, industrial sources said.

The data released earlier this week showed car sales in the local market totaled 476,987 units in 2023, up 11 percent from a year earlier.

Hon Hai Posts 20% Quarterly Growth

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (鴻海精密) posted 20 percent quarterly growth in revenue for last quarter, slightly beating its expectations, but the iPhone maker expected revenue to drift into negative territory this quarter due to seasonal weakness.

“Overall operations in the first quarter of 2024 are gradually entering the traditional off-peak season, and seasonal performance is expected to be similar to that of the past three years,” Hon Hai said in a statement.

Over the past three years, weakness in off-season demand for electronics has driven Hon Hai’s revenue down by between 26 percent and 33 percent in the first three months of the year.

Taiwan Railways Begins 2024 With Transition to State-owned Enterprise

On New Year’s Day (Jan. 1), the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) officially completed the transition from a government agency to a state-owned enterprise, 22 years after the initiative was first proposed in 2002.
