What happened in Taiwan last week? According to data released by SEMI Taiwan was the biggest market worldwide for integrated circuit equipment for use in manufacturing in the first quarter of the year.

Taiwan's Economic Structure

Last week's GTAI report on Taiwan's Economic Structure sheds light on the further growth of one of Asia's Tigers, its manufacturing sector, situation in the services department, and North and West as coastal regions of interest.

As Taiwan is maturing more and more, the industry has been able to diversify and establish the electronic sector as its forte, even in times of an overall declining growth rate. Due to a stong export orientation Taiwan has sought to increase exports into countries other than China and immediate neighbors, using the ‘Southbound Policy’ to encourage Taiwanese foreign investors to return or increasingly invest in the home market.

Electronic production of semiconductors, parts for panels, notebooks, and smartphones forms the heart of the manufacturing sector in Taiwan, with local firms mostly acting as Original Equipment Manufacturing/Original Design Manufacturing-(OEM/ODM-) partners. Their biggest advantage lies in their adaptability to integrate into changing supply chains of different products.

The northern and western coastal regions are of major importance for the Taiwanese market, given that the bulk of industrial production value is created there. The presence of clusters also plays a role for the research and production networks of different industries.
