Welcome!

Dear Subscriber

this week’s highlight was today’s presentation of our Business Confidence Survey 2018 results. We invited several journalists, Mr. Alex H.C. Chen, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Investment Services of the Ministry of Economic Affairs as well as Dr. Thomas Prinz, Director General of the German Institute Taipei to join our press conference.

To give the media a deeper understanding of the current situation of German companies in Taiwan, we also asked two distinguished German company representatives, i.e. Mr. Erdal Elver, President & CEO of Siemens Limited Taiwan and Ms. Shu-Juei Chen, Services Director of TRUMPF Taiwan Industries Co., Ltd., to share their expertise with us.

Last Monday, I met with Michael Berges, Branch Manager Taiwan of ONP Management to discuss with him the current situation of the Taiwanese Offshore Wind industry and possible future cooperation.

Furthermore, I met with several company representatives of the German automotive industry to get an even deeper understanding of the current situation of the market situation of German carmakers in Taiwan.

What happened in Taiwan last week? According to the 2019 trade competitiveness survey released by the Importers and Exporters Association of Taipei, Taiwan's trade competitiveness ranking rose one notch compared to last year, now being ranked 16th.

Business Confidence Survey 2018 Report
On January 21, the German Trade Office Taipei held its press confidence on the Business Confidence Survey 2018. The survey assessed the current state of the business environment for German companies in Taiwan, identified their biggest challenges as well as their business expectations for 2019.

Among the participating guests Mr. Alex H.C. Chen (秀全副), Deputy Director-General of the Department of Investment Services of the Ministry of Economic Affairs as well as Dr. Thomas Prinz, Director General of the German Institute Taipei. To provide a deeper insight into the current business situation of German companies, two distinguished representatives attended as well, i.e. Mr. Erdal Elver, President & CEO of Siemens Limited Taiwan and Ms. Shu-Juei Chen, Services Director of TRUMPF Taiwan Industries Co., Ltd.

The survey showed that German companies operating in Taiwan remain committed to their investments with an optimistic outlook on the overall business development, however, a slight decrease compared to 2017 could be detected. German companies currently see political stability as well as cross-strait relations as major challenges, which should be addressed appropriately by the Taiwanese government. Another major point was the still prevailing shortage of qualified staff. Therefore, the majority of German companies consider the introduction of vocational training as useful to approach this topic and to solve it in the long run.

The winner of our Business Confidence Lottery will be notified within the next few days and receive their prizes.
