Looking back on 25 years in the semiconductor industry, I am, Martin Kunz, grateful to be part of one of the best teams I have encountered in my professional career. About 12 years ago, I needed support in developing automated wafer inspection tools. At that time, Werner Kornmayer encouraged me to visit mechatronic in Villach. During the company tour, I saw a loader that looked almost identical to a concept I had sketched just a few weeks earlier. It was truly inspiring. We went on to build a series of wafer inspection tools together and successfully installed and operated them across Asia. I began my career as a trained precision mechanic, building measurement equipment at Siemens in Munich while studying physics and economics in parallel. Around 15 years ago, this Siemens business unit was sold to an SME. I supported the integration of the acquisition and, together with mechatronic, developed wafer metrology tools. During this time, building strong relationships in Asia also became a key part of my responsibilities. In 2017, I took a new role in a US-based metrology group, which was acquired by an Italian company in 2023. Now, I’m very much looking forward to working with you to help advance this exceptional company and the outstanding mechatronic team. My focus will be to actively promote mechatronic solutions and processes, especially in Asian markets. 🌀 Thin Wafers: When Less Isn’t Always More As the industry pushes toward thinner devices and stacked architectures, thin wafers are becoming the norm, especially in power devices, memory, and 3D integration. But thinner means riskier. Handling these wafers is like carrying eggshells through a factory line. 🥚💥 📏 Typical specs: • Thickness <150 µm - sometimes down to 50 µm! • Often temporarily bonded to carriers • Post-process warpage is common ⚠️ What makes thin wafers tricky: • 🪞 Flexibility = breakage if mishandled • 🌪️ Vacuum chuck can cause deformation • ⚖️ De-bonding steps introduce stress • 🔍 Optical inspection gets complicated on thin, warped wafers 🛠️ What leading fabs do: • Use edge-grip or edge-contact handling • Combine UV-tape with controlled de-bond processes • Integrate adaptive chuck pressure and active warpage compensation • Focus on gentle automation - low-force, high-precision 💡 At mechatronic systemtechnik, we’ve supported many customers with automation designed for fragile and exotic wafers, where yield depends on every micron of precision. 🔁 Are you seeing more thin wafer requirements in your processes?
