We’re excited to see that the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany’s new Hightech Agenda recognizes fusion energy as a national priority, setting a course that puts Germany back where it belongs: at the forefront of building transformative technologies. Here are some of the key highlights: 🇩🇪 A Fusion Action Plan will be presented to the federal government by the end of this year, setting the course for the first commercial fusion power plant in Germany. 🇩🇪 A Fusion Energy Research and Innovation Roadmap (FIRE) will follow by the end of next year, mapping the core technologies needed. 🇩🇪 New networking hubs for magnetic and laser fusion will enter the concept phase this year, aiming to build or expand research infrastructures and demonstrators. 🇩🇪 New funding initiatives will launch in 2025, from exploratory research to enabling technologies. 🇩🇪 The federal government is positioning itself as a potential first anchor client for fusion. Thanks to leaders like Dorothee Bär, fusion has now moved from research to industrial strategy. Germany is stepping up by investing in energy sovereignty, industrial competitiveness and deep-tech leadership, and fusion as a scalable energy solution is gaining momentum. Australia’s innovation system is world-class in research inputs—but falters when it comes to commercial outcomes. This is our long-standing "innovation paradox." Drawing on the case of Kaiserslautern, a small German city transformed into a global tech hub through the establishment of Fraunhofer Institutes, this Insight investigates the case for introducing Fraunhofer-style applied research institutes in Australia. In Germany and elsewehere, these institutes occupy the critical middle ground between fundamental research and commercial product development. They bring together governments, universities, and industry in structured public-private partnerships, delivering industrial capability, regional renewal, and sovereign strength. The model seems to work. Kaiserslautern went from rust-belt decline to an unemployment rate of 3%, with over 10,000 future-facing jobs and major international investors like Amazon and John Deere choosing to locate there. https://wix.to/LHm6aRx

🔬 Rock Tech Lithium receives funding for innovative lithium recovery   We are pleased to announce that Rock Tech Lithium has been awarded funding from the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt (Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space) for the project “ELiSePro – Efficient Lithium Recovery Using Selective Processes”. The aim of this initiative is to further increase lithium yield in our converter process at the Guben site, making a significant contribution to Germany’s raw material independence. The project will be implemented in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University, highlighting the strong partnership between industry and leading academic research in Germany. As part of the project, various state-of-the-art ion separation methods (including nanofiltration, capacitive deionization, and lithium-ion sieves) will be systematically compared to minimize lithium losses in the process. The results will be evaluated based on economic and technological criteria and are intended for direct industrial application. Innovative findings will also be published in scientific journals and patented. 𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹. Germany is preparing a new Startup and Scaleup Strategy. This is good news – after the first attempt under the previous coalition, it is essential that the new government continues this effort. But we must also learn from the shortcomings of the last version. Together with Alexander Brem, in 2023, I analyzed the first strategy in our paper published in the Journal of Entrepreneurship and Public Policy ("Supporting innovation and growth through entrepreneurship: reflections on the German Federal Government’s startup strategy”): https://lnkd.in/ewit-c4h Three lessons remain highly relevant today: 𝟭. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀. Startups succeed when networks, talent, finance, and institutions work together. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. 𝟮. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗴𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀. Germany is a federal state. In recent years, the federal government has shifted responsibility for university startup support to the states, but they have not fully compensated. Startup Factories are valuable, but without entrepreneurship education and support across universities, their impact will remain symbolic. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀. 𝟯. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀. The last strategy lacked this, turning into a list of aspirations rather than a driver of change. 𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀; 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆. We’re excited to welcome 17 students from Georgia to HZDR as part of the Georgian German Science Bridge (GGSB). The students are visiting Dresden until Saturday, August 23, taking part in the QUALI Start-Up Lectures conducted by senior scientists of HZDR, FZ Jülich and GSI. During this program, they are exploring research topics such as particle physics, medical imaging, artificial intelligence, and more. Throughout their stay, the students are getting an inside look at our institutes and large-scale research facilities, including OncoRay - National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology, while also learning what it takes to pursue a successful PhD at HZDR or other leading research institutions in Germany. Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, Scientific Director at HZDR: “This exchange with our Georgian partners is a wonderful experience for us. It’s not just about science – it’s about getting to know each other, sharing ideas, and building friendships that can last well beyond this program. When we bring together different perspectives, knowledge, and talents, we all grow and inspire each other. That’s what makes collaborations like this so valuable.” The Georgian German Science Bridge links Georgian universities with German research centers (Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft), fostering collaboration between scientists and supporting students through joint projects and exchange programs. Founded over 20 years ago, the network continues to strengthen scientific ties between Germany and Eastern Europe, driving innovation and shared knowledge across borders. Gisma University of Applied Sciences continues to generate strong #nationalmedia visibility.   Our latest research on Germany's senior mayors has been featured on the front page of BILD, confirming Gisma's growing national media presence.   Our study revealed a striking imbalance: Of #333mayors in Germany's largest cities, only #33 are #women. The findings also highlight that these leaders are predominantly male, CDU-affiliated, and earn a minimum of €134,000 annually.   "The real opportunity lies in rethinking how leadership pipelines for these offices are created," says Prof. Dr. Sara Ramzani, Head of Business Department at Gisma. Strengthening cross-border cooperation: TUD renews cooperation agreement with TU Liberec ✍️ Today, TUD Dresden University of Technology welcomed the Rector of the Technical University of Liberec, Prof. Miroslav Brzezina, and the Vice-Rector for Foreign Affairs, Prof. Kateřina Maršíková, at the TUD campus. During their meeting with TUD Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger and Chief Officer Technology Transfer and Internationalization, Prof. Ronald Tetzlaff, they renewed the joint cooperation agreement to strengthen the long-standing cooperation. "Our valuable partnership with TU Liberec is of great importance for the transnational exchange between our institutions in research and teaching. This includes, for example, the Central European Campus Nisa/Neisse," explained TUD Rector Staudinger.
