How many good wines do we know from Ansonica aka Insolia? 🤔The small, 80-year-old vineyard on the small island of Giglio. The vines stand on a bed of rocks and granite sand less than 50 metres from the sea. The wine is very delicate and even boring in the nose, with complexity on the palate. Oranges, lemon zest. sea salinity, dried herbs. Interesting to observe how this wine will perform on the market.

Here are my recommendations: Whites like Pinot Gris or Gewürztraminer, Albarino. And for the reds I think Sangiovese, Barbara, or even a nice Pinot Noir. Like most Koreans soju is perfect but I'm now quite into makjeolli (pure rice wine). If you've not tried it I highly recommend that you do.

Pinot Noir is our specialty. Our vines have been lovingly restored to produce outstanding yield and fruit of exceptional quality that is unique to the our vineyard and region in North Canterbury. This wine looks beautiful in the glass. It is deeply coloured for a Pinot Noir and shows its youth with a rim that is bright and fresh. Aromatically, it is a wonderful amalgam of Black Doris plum, ripe black cherries and cool climate herb notes. The new oak component, if it is there, is skillfully woven amongst the fruit highlights. This is a mid-weight wine with lifted fruit and a lovely balance. On the palate, it has a calmness and stillness that highlights the interplay between the fruit characters and the tannins. The tannins are there, but they are so supple and rich that they appear as a dark velvet robe surrounding the plum and cherry fruit core. The wine has great persistence and the youthful fruit and polished tannins give it incredible carry on the palate. This brightness and freshness mean that this wine is immediately appealing. It will, however, age magnificently in the cellar. Those who have the strength and willpower to lock this wine away for a number of years will be rewarded with freshness and brightness complexed by sous bois notes and even greater intensity and length. In summary: adorable now, likely to be more adorable in the future. We have been fortunate to achieve incredible feedback from the wine industry across our selections, our Pinot Noir especially, Revered New Zealand wine critic, Sam Kim from Wine Orbit reviewed our 2019 against his strict criteria. Opinion: Budget-friendly (under $25) French wines available in the US are over-rated. With so many good wines from California, Argentina....even Texas of all places, why bother with wines from 🇫🇷 with hard-to-pronounce names (ie, Chateau Aixexex-en-Ass-Proveinieuxaulais) that taste like 🫏 or cost an 🦾 and 🦵 ?
